Getting to Ibo Island

Local dhowsYou can easily connect to Ibo Island in northern Mozambique from South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania. Pemba, is in the Cabo Delgado Province and is the gateway to the Quirimbas Islands – just a short island hop away. There are daily flights from Johannesburg to Pemba and regular flights from Dar – Es – Salaam and Nairobi.   At Pemba you will be met by a representative of Ibo Island Lodge who will either escort you directly to the next light aircraft to the island, or to the air-conditioned waiting room for your short flight to Ibo Island.

The light air craft transfer to Ibo is often the highlight. Flying low over the beautiful islands and clear turquoise waters where you can sometimes spot turtles and whales in season. Ibo Island waits hidden just approximately 25 minutes away.

Miles of tropical palm lined coastline and sparkling blue ocean separate Ibo from tall buildings and industry. Ibo Island feels like a place that was forgotten and where time has stood still, but now people are getting to know her again. The air strip at Ibo Island is a grass strip in good condition where you will be met by a member of the lodge team ready to give you a warm welcome to Ibo Island Lodge.

Ibo Island is a truly special place – very lucky to have spent a week exploring here! A big thanks to all the friendly staff at the lodge for the delicious food, welcoming and gracious atmosphere. Thank you.(The next bit is from Francisco….! ) I have no words to describe the beauty of Ibo Island. But to say that I have loved my stay and enjoyed a lot. The dinner, the weather, the water, the people, the nature and the sea it’s all different and beautiful. To the friendly staff of the lodge my BIG THANKS for the lovely and relaxing atmosphere that you guys transmitted to me. For sure that I’ll be back to repeat that nice experience again. Thank you.
